O Cebreiro is one of the reference points of the Camino de Santiago. Not only because it defines the entrance of the same in Galicia, but for its symbolism and, related to it, because it is one of the places where most pilgrims choose to begin their journey.

The journey to Triacastela runs first uphill to the Alto de San Roque (1,270 m above sea level) and its monumental statue of the walker, and then gently downhill towards the small village of Triacastela.

In between, a peaceful journey through wooded areas and green meadows that reconciles us with nature.

Before starting your second stage, you will have to make a decision. Walk to Portomarín through San Xil, following the most usual and shortest route (17.8 km) or do it through the route of Samos, following the variant that will take you to one of the largest and most important monasteries on the Camino de Santiago and in Galicia.

Through San Xil you will cross one of the most beautiful valleys of the entire French Way. Through Samos, you will have to walk 7.2 km more, but you will have this spectacular monastery in sight and you will advance through a beautiful forest of oak and chestnut trees. The choice is yours.

This stage of the French Way will take you along rural paths and the famous corredoiras Galician, narrow paths under oak trees and other autochthonous species that connect the small villages that dot the landscape.

At the gates of Portomarín you will cross the great river Miño, the most important river in Galicia and under whose waters the old town lies.

There, be sure to visit the imposing church-fortress of St. Nicholas, rebuilt stone by stone at the foot of the main square after being dismantled from its original location to save it from the reservoir.

In this new stage, you will first ascend to Castro Maior - an ancient Celtic settlement - and then to the Ligonde mountain range, gradually descending through the villages of Eirexe and Ligonde.

Once in Palas de Rei you will have the opportunity to visit the castle of Pambre, one of the castles that survived the destruction of the Irmandiñas revolts that the Galician peasants carried out in the 15th century.

On the sixth day of the French Way adventure from O Cebreiro is the longest walk. There are almost 30 km that make many people decide to start the stage and spend the night in Melide, halfway.

Whether you do or not, the keynote of the day will be, once again, beautiful rural roads and medieval bridges to Melide, from where you should not leave without trying a portion of its famous polbo á feiraone of the most characteristic and special octopus dishes of popular Galician gastronomy.

From there, the Camino continues through an agricultural landscape that will lead you to cross the beautiful river Iso and, finally, to your goal and your well-deserved rest in Arzúa. If you still have strength left or if you have decided to start the stage, we recommend a visit to the monastery of Sobrado dos Monxes.

Penultimate stage of the French Way. Don't leave Arzúa without tasting its famous Arzúa-Ulloa denomination of origin cheese, one of the most appreciated cheeses in the Galician cheese-making tradition.

The stage will offer you more beautiful green landscapes and some small rural treasures such as the hermitage of Santa Irene. At the end of the day, you will find yourself in O Pedrouzo, a village that has grown in recent years, as you will see, and which offers a special hospitality to walkers.

At last! The last day of your Camino de Santiago begins from O Cebreiro and the city of the apostle awaits you after less than 20 km.

After leaving O Pedrouzo behind you will go up through O Amenal and descend towards A Lavacolla, the village that gives its name to the airport of Santiago de Compostela. From there, a new ascent will take you directly to Monte do Gozo, whose name reveals the joy of the pilgrims who, since the first millennium, arrived in Santiago by this route and saw, for the first time, the longed-for silhouette of the towers of the Cathedral.

Only four kilometres separate you from the city centre, which you will enter through the popular neighbourhoods of San Lázaro, Fontiñas or San Pedro and the famous Porta do Camiño.
