Welcome to Portugal, one of the European destinations that brings the biggest smiles to our faces when we recall the memories we have of it. Upon arrival at Lisbon airport, we will pick you up to take you to the starting point of this unforgettable cycling tour along the Costa Vicentina: Santiago do Cacém. Depending on your arrival time, we recommend that you visit the town before retiring to rest and prepare for the adventure that begins the next day.
Private transfer Lisbon Airport - Santiago do Cacém (1h 30min)
Accommodation: Octant Santiago or similar.
Distance: 50.1 km
Difficulty: ●●●○○
Accommodation: Casa do Adro da Igreja or similar.
Your adventure on the Costa Vicentina starts by leaving Santiago do Cacém and heading towards the sea, entering the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park and the famous south coast of the country, full of small coves nestled between the cliffs and the ocean. The road will take us to Porto Covo, a small village of seafaring essence and great interest, where it is worth making a stop before continuing. After leaving it behind, the day will culminate in Vila Nova de Milfontes, which unfolds along its beautiful bay, where the Mira River meets the Atlantic and which offers fantastic gastronomic options that you won't want to miss.
Distance: 50.7 km
Difficulty: ●●●○○
Accommodation: Casas do Moinho or similar.
The second stage of this route along the Rota Vicentina on Portugal's wildest coastline takes us to Cabo Sardão and the lighthouse that guards it. Here one of the most imposing coastal landscapes in southern Europe becomes apparent, the result of a unique communion between land and ocean. The route continues with an abundance of detail and sweeping views of the Atlantic towards Zambujeira do Mar, a village of white houses suspended over the cliffs, and Odeceixe, a charming end to the stage in the shade of an old windmill.
Distance: 45.6 km
Difficulty: ●●○○○
Accommodation: Herdade Monte do Sol or similar.
Fourth day of this tour, which will start at the incredible beach of Odeceixe and follow the valley where the caravels entered and left the port of Aljezur and lead to the large fields of sweet potato crops, which are of the highest quality here. It is worth stopping to sample the interesting local cuisine and stroll through the narrow medieval streets to the castle. From there, the best thing to do is to continue to the beautiful beach of Monte Clérigo and to Ponta da Atalaia - where the remains of an old Arab rifat remain - to finally end the day in Arrifana.
Distance: 57.9 km
Difficulty: ●●●○○
Accommodation: Memmo Baleeira or similar.
Another opportunity to make the most of this cycling route along the Costa Vicentina. Leaving the village of Arrifana behind, the road will bring us to quiet wooded areas and constant returns to copper and ash-coloured beaches and cliffs. Carrapateira appears before us, a pretty village surrounded by vegetation, and the beach of Bordeira, just 1 kilometre from the village. From there, through a beautiful pine forest, we continue our way to Cape São Vicente, the south-western tip of Europe. Here the cliffs take on monumental shapes and it is worth simply sitting and contemplating the immensity before finishing the route in the neighbouring village of Sagres.
Distance: 42.9 km
Difficulty: ●●○○○
Accommodation: Hotel Marina Rio or similar.
The last cycling day of this adventure on the wildest coast of Portugal, to cover the 43 kilometres that separate Sagres from Lagos, avoiding the non-cyclable sections of the Trilho dos Pescadores and the Rota Vicentina, but approaching the beautiful beaches of Barranco, Ingrina, Salema and Burgau. On this stretch the whimsical cliffs of the Costa d'Oiro will also appear before our eyes, leading us to the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse, just a stone's throw away from the end of our stage in Lagos.
Optionalboat trip along the Oiro coast and the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade.
The seventh day is for collecting and sorting out the memories of this incredible week of cycling along the Costa Vicentina. Reminisce about the rugged landscape, the intense blue of the ocean, the flavours of olive oil, fresh fish and coffee. You won't want to go back home.
Private transfer to Faro (1h) or Lisbon (2h45)
