From Malpica to Fisterra along the Lighthouse Way

Welcome to Malpica de Bergantiños, the point where the Way of the Lighthouses begins. A typical seafaring town, this is where you will have your first contact with the route, so be sure to stroll through its streets.

The adventure on this Costa da Morte Lighthouse Trail begins in Malpica, leaving the town behind and heading towards the smallest of the lanterns that give this trail its name: the Punta Nariga lighthouse. The first stage will make us leave Malpica (although we will return at the end of the day) and face a path with continuous changes of level always close to the ocean. Quiet, almost deserted beaches, in the middle of unexpected inlets, the Sisargas Islands in the background and the beautiful lighthouse and the atoll of Punta Nariga will take us to the beach of Niñóns, where the first stage of this spectacular route ends.

Second stage of this Way of the Lighthouses, which will take us through a great variety of landscapes, from Niñóns, where we left off the previous day, to Ponteceso. A day of technical complexity awaits us that will delight the most experienced walkers, and that will reward each step with the magnificent cliffs of Roncudo, the peaceful interior of the Corme-Laxe estuary, Monte da Facha, the mouth of the river Anllóns and the dunes of A Barra. The Roncudo lighthouse and the stage where the barnacle workers perform their daily struggle against the elements make this stage a unique route.

The third stage of our route begins in the middle of the estuary of the river Anllóns, entering an area less exposed to the ocean and populated for millennia, as witnessed by the prehistoric remains of Borneiro and Dombate. To compensate for the effort of the previous day, the route will be much more peaceful, with the only difficulty being the ascent to Mount Castelo de Lourido (312 m asl), the summit of this Way of the Lighthouses and a fantastic place to admire the views in the distance. The descent will take us back to the estuary and along the imposing coast of Cabana, full of bays and small beaches where time seems to stand still. Further on, Punta do Cabalo and, after passing it, Laxe, the end of this new stage.

We are now approaching the halfway point of this Lighthouse Way of the Costa da Morte and we celebrate it with a peaceful and short stage that continues the dynamic of the previous day. We leave Laxe in search of the so-called Praia dos Cristais, along a route that will take us through the Insua mountain to the lighthouse of Laxe, and through the Peñón de Soesto to the beach of Traba, with its lagoon full of life. The last stretch runs along a spectacular stretch of rocky coastline to Camelle, the end of this fantastic stage.

In this fifth stage we will walk along the stretch where it all began: the coast that connects Camelle and Cabo Vilán, whose long history of shipwrecks has given its name to the whole region of the Costa da Morte. The path, easy, will take us to the so-called Cemetery of the English, where we will reflect on the meaning of the names we give to places. And then it will take us to the lighthouse of Cabo Vilán, a key point of the whole geography that we will walk through in this Way of the Lighthouses. The day ends covering the Arco do Vilán until we reach Camariñas, entering the estuary of the same name.

The longest stage of the Way of the Beacons arrives on this seventh day of adventure. On the other hand, it is almost completely flat, so we will be able to advance without any problems and spend more time contemplating the landscape. The aim of the day is to go around the Camariñas estuary, crossing its gentle landscape and its small, quiet villages. After passing the mouth of the Río Grande and the magnificent beach of O Lago, we will arrive at Muxía and its imposing Santuario da Barca, a place linked to the Camino de Santiago and with a long tradition of welcoming pilgrims and walkers.

We begin the seventh stage of this Way of the Lighthouses by returning to a technically more complex route: the one that will take us along the coast of Touriñán to the lighthouse of the same name and to the westernmost cape of Galicia. The first part, up to Moreira beach, will test our abilities on a technical route, but one that is worth every step. From there, the second part is considerably gentler. Along its path we will reach the Touriñán lighthouse and, after it, the beach of Nemiña, a true natural paradise where we will finish the stage.

Last stage of the Way of the Lighthouses to reach the eternal Cape Fisterra. Beaches and cliffs follow one another framing some landmarks such as the imposing Playa de Rostro, Cabo da Nave and the beach of Mar de Fóra, before starting the final climb to Monte Facho - the last effort to reach, after its summit, the iconic lighthouse of Fisterra, where the lighthouse walkers mingle with those arriving from Compostela and where contemplating the death of the sun submerged in the Ocean serves as a true finishing touch to this magnificent route of almost 200 kilometres.

How about diving in an underwater tour of the Sea of Dentro and Cape Fisterra?
